Despite attaching a big fat ‘2021’ to the end of God of War Ragnarok’s teaser trailer, we don’t think anyone in the industry realistically expects it to release this year. However, there’s always a contingent of outspoken fans who whip themselves into a frenzy ahead of gaming events like State of Play, expecting updates on titles clearly still in the faraway future. Writing on Twitter, director Cory Barlog had a message for those people:
“I don’t know who needs to hear this,” he wrote, “but when it’s done.” He added in parentheses: “Trust that it’s what’s best for everyone.” While Barlog didn’t explicitly mention the next God of War game in his message, it’s fairly obvious what he’s referring to. Patience, boy.

I want to watch a play video.
So second half of 2022 then for Ps5 only. I can wait.
I agree with him, but he should direct that tweet to Sony, not us. “2021 with a logo” was their idea.
Then don't attach a release window on it. I get you have investors you need to appease by teasing games early and providing estimates of release dates. But this "we will release when its done" and then giving release dates before showing a frame of gameplay is totally trying to have your cake and eat it too.
As I said in a different comment section, slapping a 2021 release window on the teaser trailer was silly. It was an obvious move to get more people to buy a PS5 ASAP.
I can't imagine how many people have been barraging Barlog with stupid s**t because of the lack of God of War during the latest SoP, so I feel for the guy. He must be super frustrated to be on the receiving end of something he probably had no say in starting.
Woooooow. Really?
Good, after cyberpunk I think most devs will think twice before releasing hyped unfinished games again.
Cory probably gets a ton of abuse online from self-entitled gamers harrassing him about GoW. I can only imagine the stress the devs are under, especially with the increased scrutiny following the Cyberpunk 2077 debacle. I'm glad he's putting this out there. Quite right too.
Cory gets bombarded every day with questions. Sony don't help themselves though with that ps4 theme that said Ragnorok is coming , nor the teaser saying 2021 which was clearly unrealistic
@Turismo4GT having watched corys interviews and reading them i feel sorry for the fool who tries that ***** with him..he dosnt strike me as a liberal softie who will just take abuse..
Let's not pretend that this "they are impatient" narrative has anything to do with customers. We will buy games whenever they are released. Regardless of whether we are angry or not because of delays.
All this ever had and will have to do is with higher-ups pushing for a release. All these devs doing the "whoever needs to hear it"... they are talking to their money people, not us.
I'd be perfectly fine with this (maybe even eager) if it wasn't for the fact that the first trailer announced a 2021 launch window.
Here was me thinking they’d release it unfinished.
@nessisonett I guess you have not been for a long time its the way it is with lots of games.
On the flip side, Horizon featured in a February newsletter image regarding 2021 releases so I think that’s confirmation on Sony’s front it’s coming out this year, woo.
All games should wait until they're done, to come out. Return us the favor of a complete masterpiece after we dish our hard earned money. <3
@Northern_munkey he's definitely a man with opinions.
I'm not sure what "liberal" even means anymore these days but Cory strikes me as a man who knows better than to get into arguments with strangers but also not afraid to speak his mind if he feels it's important - like he did against some homophobic comments recently.
'Gamers' are so impatient these days, if Developers take their time to ensure they create a high-quality game, they get told to hurry up and release the game, and then b*tch & moan when the game has issues BECAUSE they were pressured and rushed by the 'Gamers'.
I'm starting to think 'Gamers' don't really want high-quality games anymore, they just want another simplified experience with no real depth... like pretty much what the majority of Third-Party games have become.
Most of us are happy to wait but they really shouldn't have put that 2021 on the trailer
Used be what id software used to say and I never had any complaints.
He could just be home baking and have some bread in the oven.
People are so damn impatient these days.play your backlog of games watch some movies tv shows.spend times with your wife or girlfriend.let the g.o.a.t kratos chill out for a bit.the game will be ready when its ready.word up son
I agree it should only be released ‘when it’s done’ but then don’t put a date on it in the first place. You can’t blame people for getting their hopes up or being excited about your next game. Would they rather people be like, ‘oh, I couldn’t care less’ ...?
@nessisonett God of War Unfinished: From Broken Father to Broken Code - The Early Edition
Cory Barlog needs his Twitter revoked
Well said Cory. I know they put a 2021 date on it but people a global pandemic happened. Its still happening. There will be plenty of games to play in the meantime. Did cyberpunk teach you nothing? Impatience leads to unpolished games and crunch
I like games to be released in a finished state personally
I never had faith in the 2021 release window but to be fair, I'm guessing the industry did not expect the pandemic to stimm be going as strong as it is going right now. Returnal & Kena were demayed, Ratchet and Clank was a ''launch window'' title and is now coming out in June, GT7 is delayed to next year, Horizon is released late 2021. If God Of War had to releasenin 2021 it would have probably been a winter holiday release, if most thing went back to normal...
@Jayslow but, you know, there's a pandemic right now, kinda hard to reach deadlines when working on a game from home away from your team and studio
@DayBlueberry first off I'm not saying Santa Monica is slacking. Pandemic or no pandemic its hard to believe they make a follow up to a 2018 game on the ps5 in just 3 years. Its why myself and most others didn't believe 2021 for a second.
But also my reaction to using the pandemic as an excuse lately remains the same to my reaction with Polyphony recently delaying gran turismo. There was a pandemic going on when you announced that release date. So obviously they should have already taken account the productivity declining due to the remote nature of their work environment now. I just find it to be a weak excuse almost a year into this. Especially for recently announced games.
Whoever was expecting the next God of War to show up in the last State of Play was setting himself up for a bad time....
But then, again, I myself was expecting to see Horizon Forbidden West so I also get a taste of the same medicine.
The headline of the article is a little misleading. He didn’t mention anything about PS5, but, to me, the title implies that GoW:R will be a PS5 exclusive. Likely an unintentional oversight.
“Are we there yet?”
“We’ll get there when we get there!!!”
You listening cyberpunk?
I follow Cory on twitter, like probably most of you guys do, and I gotta be honest, I feel sorry for the dude at times. Every day is non-stop posts of people asking when the game is coming out, it's downright annoying to be honest.
Tbf most Sony exclusives are extremely polished when released and they do give studios alot of time to make their games so I expect nothing else when they say God of war will be released when it's ready 👍
As long as it's not buggy as Cyber than I can wait for however much time they need.
@Jayslow we get it, you didn't believe it wasn't coming in 2021, good for you. You can move on now... There is no need to cry and get upset about a possible delay because they put a 2021 on a splash screen last year.
Maybe they (Santa Monica and Sony) thought 2021 was going to be better (in terms of the pandemic), but now that doesn't seem to be the case (it is getting better, but slower as they expected).
At the end of the day, only an annoying small vocal portion of gamers make delays of games to be a big deal. This game will sell regardless when it comes out, especially if it is good and polished like the previous one.
We will release it when it's ready, probably next year, so despite us saying sometime this year which covers not only this exact moment but the previous month, stop asking because we have been very clear about its release the whole time and not said something that most people didn't believe when we initially said it. But if you did believe us when we said it, your now wrong for asking for more information, even though we are now in a time covered by our initial announcement.
You've gotta love the clear messaging!
They showed 2021 but it never said anything about releasing in 2021. It could have meant first reveal in 2021 for all we knew. Besides it doesn't matter if they put out a very vague release window or not, some will still be inpatient. Look at BOTW 2.
Honestly this prick needs a reality check. It was your game attached to a release window used to drive up profits of the platform that supports you. The mature and honest thing to do would to announce a delay, rather than post some flippant nerd response about patience.
You created an expectation, to those that fund your life. Honor it or inform us of changes. period.
@kundaliniRising333 Cory Barlog never explicitly mentioned GoW in his tweet, yes it was deliberately vague to tease his followers who are used to his humour. Besides it's not up to him on when to update people on GoW in the first place.
As it should be.....
However, announcing the game when you did is going to attract attention, questions etc and demands for 'more' information - especially with that 'reveal'! People will be wanting something more sooner rather than later after that!
Take their time. No rush. I be happy if it comes out winter 2022 or spring 2023.
@Westernwolf4 No he is posting it towards entitled gamers out there who think they deserve something. Sony has nothing to do with it. Just like all this State of Play talk, I mean just be quiet and watch what they want to show you. These companies don't have to show you anything or give updates, and when they do gamers still complain.
Well my stance on this is, games shouldn't announce anything until around 12 months before they think it's ready for release, at least by then if there are any delays then in theory it should only be a few months, also in that 12 months you can slowly build the hype, instead of say 3years announcement big hype for few months then everyone forgetting about it until final year. But I totally agree when it's done it's done but as others have said don't put a 2021 release on end of trailer and then say when it is done it's done lol. But looking forward to this hopefully will be worth the wait, but I'm going to guess April next year release at earliest.
I'm hoping this is not released until 2023.
CDPR said the same about Cyberpunk and we all know how that went down, I'm sure God Of War will be great though.
@GamingVeteran Sony has nothing to do with it? Sony told gamers to expect this game in 2021. That has everything to do with this.
I agree with you that gamers are not entitled to updates, and that gamers can sometimes be impatient. But when Sony hypes a release window to sell new hardware like it did here let’s hold them accountable for pushing the hype train forward and fueling that impatience.
@Westernwolf4 There was also this thing called a GLOBAL PANDEMIC that happened started in Nov/Dec of 2019, that I know its shocking but is still going on....You know the one that has killed over 500,000 people just in the US alone....
I know its rocket science and so hard to grasp but when things shut down because of a pandemic, that generally stops work on things from happening.....Its hilarious that people don't seem to grasp that they might have wanted to release in in 2021, but Covid may have had a different plan....
So what his really saying is Sony lied about a 2021 release date to get you to buy a PS5, but GOW releasing this year was never going to happen internally.
I swear this website is the most anti-PlayStation PlayStation site on the internet. From the articles to the comments. Unbelievable.
@__marc I don’t know what your ridiculous condescending post was made for, but you should really get a grip.
If this is how you talk to people who politely express an opinion different than yours, than not many people are going to listen to you about anything. And rightfully so.
There is a lot to discuss about gaming companies pushing hype vs. consumers being unreasonable, a tension that existed well before this pandemic. But why would I bother with someone so rude?
Maybe just to say that most everyone thought Sony was pushing an unrealistic release date for GOW to push hardware the minute it was announced, so that unrealistic target never had a single thing to do with Covid. But whatever, clearly you have this tension that has existed since gaming started all figured out, being so smart and all.
I absolutely defend Santa Monicas position here, and in the aftermath of cyberpunk is there anyone left who doesn't?
Apparently the suits at the top of the Sony towers, that's who....
@Octane God of War 2: Interseqel: Remix 2.8: For the Future: Complete Edition: Season 1 Pass
You laugh but by the last episode we'll be there...
The only real mistake they made was the 2021 release window, but nowadays I don't take the release window thing too seriously with any developer, Biomutant, Dead Island 2, Dying Light 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, Project Awakening, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Far Cry 6, just to name a few that had release windows, but never met them, and some we are still waiting on... mainly Dead Island 2 & Dying Light 2 for me, I REALLY want to play these games, I'm a sucker for zombie games.
No gameplay was shown and a big fat 2021 date was in the trailer. It’s obvious it wasn’t going to be out this year and Sony lied about the release date to shift more PS5’s no doubt about it.
Very shifty.
I don't think anyone was gullible enough to believe Sony or SM when they said 2021.
@RBMango "As I said in a different comment section, slapping a 2021 release window on the teaser trailer was silly. It was an obvious move to get more people to buy a PS5 ASAP."
Was it, though? I mean, did they really think there was any chance they'd struggle to sell ps5s after the huge success of ps4 and the the reception of ps5?
@Fenbops Yeah, evil Sony that can't sell Ps5s. Makes a whole lot of sense.
@Kidfried. No doubt playa.word up son
@naruball No, but telling your giant audience that the sequel to one of the last generation's most celebrated games is coming next year is definitely guaranteed to get at least some more people a lot more interested in getting a PS5.
So sorry for all the fools that believed this was going to be released in 2021. It was obviously just a Sony PR lie.
Everyone needs to let this sink in and accept it. You can't rush art.
Not sure why SONY announced this game last year really??? The hype for the PS5 was sky high anyway without this announcement. They should of kept it for when(if ever) Microsoft showed a 'AAA' Exclusive for the new Xbox console. Oh well.
@AdamNovice your post #46 is the reason why people call someone like you a fanboy.
No one needs to give you an explanation. You will conjure it your self to curb your own expectations.
I mean do you honestly have no idea how ridiculous you sound in that post?
"it could be first reveal for all we knew". Really? That is what the "date" on trailers mean now a days? "first reveal"?
My Lord.
@starbuck2212
Wait, I am so confused right now. so are you claiming that they were not telling the truth the entire time?
@Carl-G I am not sure if you realize this but your last post is absurd.
First, You are suggesting that Sony shouldn't have even brought up a release date if they weren't sure when the game was going to be finished... So they wouldn't "mislead" the audience.
You then proceed to suggest that they should have only misled the audience... "if/when" Microsoft ever announced... And I quote... "if ever" a AAA exclusive?
Really dude? Really?
So why would they say 2021 then? I feel like all games, big and small, should only announce release dates when they know the game is good to go.
I truly hope they take their time with this game, I'm fine with waiting until 2022 or even 2023!
